“SP Crater, following Monsoon Rains.” SP Crater cinder cone and lava flow lie just north of Arizona’s San Francisco Peaks, adjacent to the western edge of the Painted Desert. Greg captured this normally dry and barren landscape tinted by greenery following unusually heavy monsoon rains.
Located in the San Francisco Volcanic Field, SP Crater is one of the newest among over 600 volcanic craters within about 40 miles, and therefore one of the most crisply preserved.
For those not familiar, cinder cones form when violent volcanic eruptions blast liquid lava high into the air, and the resulting droplets solidify and fall back to earth in conical piles.
