“Malpaís Lava Field”

Views from the Flying Carpet Fine Art Print

Greg photographed “Malpaís Lava Field,” over the Potrillo Volcanic Field northwest of Las Cruces, New Mexico. (Click on the image to see a larger photo.)

America’s desert Southwest was largely sculpted by volcanic action, and nowhere is that more evident than in the great ancient lava fields of New Mexico. From the ground these “malpaís” areas are largely impassable and visually incomprehensible, but from the air it takes little imagination to picture the crackling, bubbling torrents of volcanic lava that formed these jagged badlands.

Greg photographed “Malpaís Lava Field” en route from Flagstaff to El Paso. Read about the journey in his Flying Carpet column, “New Friends.”
