This month’s View from the Flying Carpet was photographed northwest of Las Cruces in southern New Mexico.
Is everyone else as intrigued by volcanoes as I am? America’s desert Southwest was largely sculpted by volcanic action, and nowhere is that more evident than in the great ancient lava fields of New Mexico. From the ground these “malpaís” areas are largely impassable and visually incomprehensible, but from the air it takes little imagination to picture the crackling, bubbling torrents of volcanic lava that formed these great jagged badlands.
I photographed “Malpaís Lava Field” en route from Flagstaff to El Paso. (Read about the journey in my Flying Carpet column, “New Friends,” first published in AOPA Flight Training magazine, January, 2008.)
