This month’s Views from the Flying Carpet image was photographed over the Painted Desert in northeastern Arizona.
No, there’s nothing wrong with my camera! The mineral tints of Arizona’s famed Painted Desert are so far out chromatically that when people see my aerial photographs of the area, they often don’t believe the colors are real. What I love about this particular photograph is that the adjacent landscape and vegetation serve as a touchpoint to conventional reality. You know that stuff at upper left is real, so you can accept the radical colors of the Painted Desert as real.
I photographed “Edge of the Painted Desert” on a morning mission from Flagstaff to Albuquerque. (Read my Flying Carpet column, “Game Plan,” describing this particular trip. It first appeared in AOPA Flight Training magazine, September, 2011.)
“Edge of the Painted Desert,” is debuting in Limited Edition sizes of 27″x40″ and “24”x36″, and Open Editions of 16″x24″ and 10″x14″.
