This month’s Views from the Flying Carpet prints are all about illusion.
I’ve always been intrigued by visual anomaly, whether discovered on the ground or from the air.
I captured this view of the “Gila River threading the Needle’s Eye Wilderness” on a flight between Safford and Glendale. Only from the air does the river fully reveal its seemingly impossible course through the Mescal Mountains’ ancient strata of upturned rock.
I photographed “Isabel, Kansas” (right) southwest of Wichita early one morning, homeward-bound for Flagstaff, Arizona.
By aligning with a skewed railroad track rather than the surrounding north-south farm grid extending hundreds of miles in every direction, the town floats disconcertingly disconnected from its surroundings. I’ve never visited Isabel on the ground, but doubt many residents or terrestrial visitors perceive its proximity to “the Twilight Zone.”
“San Pedro River,” and “Isabel, Kansas,” are debuting in Limited Edition sizes of 27″x40″ and “24”x36″, and Open Editions of 16″x24″ and 10″x14″. Prices range from $175 for an unmounted 10″x14″ print, to $1500 for a museum-mounted 27″x40″, with numerous options in between.
